My Artistic Purpose:

As a photographer, it is my goal to connect with my subjects on a deep and meaningful level.  My artistic goal is to capture the essence of my subject, and to share a lasting impression or feeling about that subject with the viewer.   On location, I love to learn about the area, the culture, the people, the landscape, the architecture, the food, the wildlife, etc. – and to create images that capture the essence of that location and share a clear feeling of what it was like to be there.  My family is passionate about traveling and learning about new and different places.  We like to hike and camp, and we follow the “leave no trace” philosophy, that our world is meant to be appreciated and protected, and that you visit, explore, experience and learn, but that you do not alter or negatively impact the place you have been.  Photography allows me to connect deeply with every place I visit, and to record the essence of what that place is and how it felt to be there, and then to share that impression with others.

In my portrait and product work – I use the same philosophy.  Getting to know a person, learning about them, and creating a connection with them, helps me to create portraits that truly capture and reveal not just the image of the person, but their personality as well.  In product work, understanding the passion behind the creation of the product and the packaging, the goal, the intended audience, and what the creator wants to convey about the product, all allow me to connect with the product and to photograph it in a way that passes on that level of detail, and the essence of the product, to the viewer.

Photography is about seeing, and about technical and artistic skill, but for me – it is much more about connecting to the world around you with intention and authenticity, while recording it a way that shares your understanding and impression of the essence of your subjects with others.
